The pilgrimage road Via Francigena doesn't look much like the Croisette in Cannes with its palm trees, beach and promenade. Still it seems that George Clooney fell in love with Tuscany after a motorcycle tour with a friend past old castles, chapels and medieval towns along the river Magra. The American actor set his eyes on a partly renovated stonehouse in Pontremoli, in the Lunigiana area, north of Massa en Carrara.

It seems that George Clooney purchased a 16th century country house along the pilgrimage route Via Francigena in Pontremoli. This route starts in England's Canterbury and crosses the Gran San Bernardo mountain pass, wiggling along many small settlements up to Rome. The Hollywood-star is not impressed with Versilia, the nearby coastal strip with the classy beach resorts Forte dei Marmi and Marina di Pietrasanta. These places are not too far away from Pontremoli, the village that conquered the heart of George Clooney.

The actor seems to prefer less crowded, quiet and authentic areas like Lake Como, where he currently owns a lakeside villa. Apparently the many large scale development projects accross the lake (including the construction of two Dubai-style artificial islets facing Varenna) have disaffected Clooney and made him move down to Tuscany.
The beauty of the less known but splendid Lunigiana area had attracted other vips in the recent past. Also the famous Italian songwriter and singer Zucchero Fornaciari, known from hits like Baila (sexy thing) and Bacco Perbacco, owns a beautifully renovated country house in Pontremoli, a place which inspired him to write some of his greatest hits.
For now the inhabitants of Pontremoli don't comment George Clooney's alleged purchase but some of them may already long to see him cruise the town on his motorcycle or walk the quiet roads of the town centre and ask him for an autograph.
