This holiday home was obtained by a recent and complete renovation of a 14th century Tower in the centre of Capoliveri, a hillside town on Elba Island with amazing sea views.
The apartment was the subject of a major renovation by the Portuguese architect Vina Matos and Norwegian Anne Herzog. Despite the constraints imposed by the local authorities, they managed to radically change the inside, without touching the outside, and made it an object of great prestige and rare charm. The minimalist elegance, mainly due to the homogeneity of the internal and external environments, was achieved thanks to the ancient "pastellone" technique, which is similar to the terrazzo floor technique, and the use of a resin cement.
The rooms are very comfortable, even though they are deployed on several different levels and within a total area of only 100 sqm. To optimize the surfaces and to make the spaces more usable, much of the furniture, cabinets, shelves and chairs were made of masonry.
Multipurpose solutions have been adopted such as the sofas in the living room, which are easily convertible into beds of three meters in length or into tables, with iron legs and wooden table extensions.
The details make the apartment more personal and unique: the hand-painted pillows, the metal numbers used as kitchen cabinet handles, the cabinet doors which are recovered from abandoned woods from a shipyard in Viareggio or the wardrobe doors which are recovered from an ancient Palace in Lisbon. Every detail is taken care of with attention ... and the result is clearly visible.
Finally the view of the sea and the beaches around Capoliveri is amazing. One could sit on the terrace for hours and admire the views of Elba Island and enjoy the sea breeze.
